In 1964, congress authorized the coinage of 45 million silver dollars of the popular "Peace" design which was used from 1921 to 1935. In fact, 316,000 Peace Silver Dollars were minted in Denver in early 1965 with a 1964 date. These coins were produced mainly due to the lobbying efforts of Las Vegas casino owners who still used actual silver dollars (Morgan and Peace) in their casinos. They were desperate for a "new" supply of U.S. silver dollars since the next year, 1965, would see the end of production for all U.S. silver coins. Due to public outrage against the casino owners, the government abandoned this program and every single coin was melted before release. An authentic 1964-D Peace Dollar Proof would be priceless if any actually existed! This exact size silver reproduction shows what "could have been". The coin is stamped "COPY" on the reverse in accordance with the Hobby Protection Act of 1973.
