The British Royal Mint has struck a special edition 1 oz Britannia silver bullion coin featuring the crowned coinage portrait of His Majesty The King to honor and celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on May 6, 2023.
This special coronation edition is brilliant uncirculated with a gorgeous "proof-like" finish and features the first ever effigy of His Majesty King Charles III with a crown. Only 200,000 coins were minted for this special coronation issue. Each coin is struck from 1 ounce of 0.999 fine silver and is legal tender in England with a face value of £2. The inscription "D.G.REX.F.D" stands for Latin "Dei Gratia Rex Fidei Defensor". Translation from King's title "Charles III by Grace of God King, Defender of the Faith". The FD title was given by Pope Leo X in 1521 to Henry VIII and has been used ever since.
The stunning design, by award-winning sculptor Philip Nathan, depicts Britannia standing proudly, trident in hand. For added security, this year's coin features all new surface animation, tincture lines, and micro text as part of the design. Britannia's image is steeped in history, having been featured on a coin of every British monarch since the reign of Charles II (1660-1685). The obverse features the first ever crowned coinage portrait of His Majesty The King, created by British sculptor Martin Jennings, with the all new portrait receiving the Monarch's personal approval.
The Silver Britannia is arguably the most beautiful of all the world one ounce silver coins and is also very hard to find since few are exported to the United States, especially this special edition coronation coin. Supplies are very limited and the coin may sell out without notice.
Each coin will be shipped in a 2x2 non-PVC safety flip unless you buy 25 coins which would come in their original plastic mint tube. The coins also fit into our 39 mm plastic capsules (sold separately in packs of ten holders).
